The Grinnell College women’s tennis team picked up exactly where it left off last fall in its match Sunday at Orlando, Fla.
The Pioneers, who were a perfect 13-0 in the fall season, added another win as they knocked off Oglethorpe University 6-3.
Grinnell swept doubles matches against Oglethorpe, which fell to 3-9, with victories at No. 1 by Sadhana Athreya ’14 and Laura Krull ’13, Toby Cain ’12 and Emma Macdonald ’14 at No. 2 and Shirlene Luk ’15 and Clothilde Thirouin ’14 at No. 3.
Singles wins came from Luk at No. 2, Cain at No. 3 and Macdonald at No. 4.
“I’m pleased with doubles play, especially since we’re working with two new combos,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. “Laura and Sadhana looked especially strong at No. 1 doubles. We’re going to need them to continue that if we’re going to have a strong spring season like we had in the fall.
“I’m also particularly pleased with the way Shirlene and Toby looked in the first match of the spring,” he added. “Both did plenty of work in the off-season to play quality tennis this spring.
“The first day of our spring season is also the first day of our spring break trip, so it’s bound to be tough physically as the week wears on,” Hamilton continued. “But I know our women will be focused and give the best effort they can.”
Grinnell plays Calvin on Monday.
