Leah Russell ’11 (pictured) claimed runner-up honors in the 800-meter run to lead the Grinnell College women’s track and field team Saturday at the Monmouth College Fighting Scot Invitational.
She ran the race in 2:22.93 en route to beating all but one runner in the 27-woman field.
Also at the meet, a trio of Pioneer women improved their standing on the program’s all-time chart.
Sachi Graber ’12 remained sixth on the pole vault list, but improved her mark to 9-4 ¼. She was seventh in the event.
Also, Isabelle Miller ’13 and Megan Huey ’12 finished eighth and ninth in the javelin with throws of 101-6 and 100-6, respectively. That moved them up to fifth and sixth on Grinnell’s all-time chart.
Grinnell had a number of other top 10 finishers. Mickie O’Brien ’11 was sixth in the 3000 steeplechase in 13:26.45 and the 4x100 relay team was sixth in 52.88.
The 4x400 relay team was seventh in 4:31.19, while eighth place went to Allegra Kwong ’11 in the triple jump (29-8).
Christine Ajinjeru ’14 placed ninth in the 200 in 27.60 and Maia Olsen ’11 was 10th in the 400 hurdles in 1:18.31.
As a team, Grinnell placed eighth in the team standings with 18 points. The winner was Monmouth with 191.6.
The Pioneers return to Monmouth this weekend for the 2011 Midwest Conference Championships.
