The sky was the limit for Wartburg’s Skye Morrison on the opening day of the 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Grinnell College.

Morrison soared 6.17 meters (20 feet, 3 inches) in the women’s long jump to break the NCAA Championships record of 5.96 meters set by Wheaton’s Shimera Daniels in 2002.

Hundreds of the elite track and field athletes were on hand Thursday night as Grinnell College hosted the 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship Banquet at Darby Gymnasium.

Among the speakers were Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Grinnell College President Raynard Kington. The keynote speaker was Olympic coach Joe Vigil.

Qualifiers were announced Monday for the NCAA Division III National Indoor Track and Field Championships slated for Friday and Saturday, March 9-10, in Grinnell.

Nine women’s individual champs and four men return to defend titles in the meet, which will be contested at Grinnell College’s Charles Benson Bear ’39 Recreation and Athletic Center Field House.

Two Grinnell College women’s track and field performers have made breaking school records a common theme in 2012.

Sarah Burnell ’14 and Eloise Miller ’15 continued that trend Saturday afternoon at the Iowa State University Qualifier last chance indoor meet in Ames.

Burnell shattered her own school mark in the 800-meter run, which she set earlier this year, when she won her heat in 2:15.51. Her previous best was 2:16.52.

Yet another school record tumbled for the Grinnell College women’s track and field team at the 2012 Midwest Conference Indoor Championships Saturday at Jacksonville, Ill.

The quartet of Isabelle Miller ’13, Christine Ajinjeru ’14, Eloise Miller ’15 and Sarah Burnell ’14 destroyed the school mark in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:04.33. That was good for second place in the event and beat the old mark of 4:06.53, set earlier...
