Bessinger Wins Steeplechase for Pioneers; Sets School Record

Becky Bessinger '09 led a handful of Pioneer women track and field athletes who took part in the Cornell Invitational on Saturday, by winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase in school-record fashion and taking fifth in the 800 meter run.

Bessinger took the steeplechase by just under a second with a time of 11:58.75, breaking the old school record by 28 seconds. Her 800 time of 2:33.17 was six seconds off of the winning time.

Grinnell landed the top two spots in the pole vault with Cassie Sims '08 winning the event at 8' 6.25" as Christy Cloninger '08 took second at 7' 06.5". Sarah Freeman '09 (62'11) took 12th in the discus and 11th in the shot put (23' 3.5"). She later placed seventh in the javelin with a toss of 53'03".

The Pioneers will return to competition next Saturday when they host the Dick Young Classic with the start time slated for 9:00 a.m.
