I discovered this photo in the Concerned Black Students archives, and wanted to post it for a couple of reasons. This was taken during a CBS versus faculty basketball game, held as a benefit for the recently established King Scholarship, and the uniforms these guys are suited up in are wonderful. Anywhere I can eat mozzarella sticks until my head starts to hurt is a place I'm happy to be, but sometimes the Spencer Grille leaves me wanting for finer cuisine. I wasn't sure if there was ever a better alternative until I stumbled across the pictured menu, tucked away in the files regarding the Forum. Did you know that Grinnell College used to have horse stables? I didn't, either, until I found the Kelly Stables plaque (pictured right) in the Vault. Sometimes, in the course of processing material for special collections or the archives, we come across items like this that capture our attention, but for which we have little information. My first three years at Grinnell, I worked with a very special, very small part of the Special Collections and Archives -- the postcards collection. My task: scan, enter, and add metadata (cataloging information) for hundreds of the postcards from the Iowa Historic Postcard Collection. Happy Birthday Charles Dickens!
2012 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great English novelist, Charles Dickens. Characters such as Tiny Tim, Ebenezer Scrooge, Oliver Twist, Little Nell, Mr. Pickwick, Miss Havisham, and countless others have found immortality through his stories.
