by Sam Dunnington, '14 I discovered this photo in the Concerned Black Students archives, and wanted to post it for a couple of reasons. This was taken during a CBS versus faculty basketball game, held as a benefit for the recently established King Scholarship, and the uniforms these guys are suited up in are wonderful. They wouldn't be out of place at some of the wilder Harris parties. Additionally, I was surprised at the caption that accompanied the photo. Originally published in the September... Read More...

From the beginning, we have had a lot of talented students in support and development: Yasir Mehboob ‘03, Yaw Nti-Addae ‘04, Kabenla Armah '04, Jingsheng Wang '08, Mark Root-Whiley '09, Tianqi Zhang '11 and Doug Dobrzynski '13, to name the main ones. Not only do the students bring their talent and energy to the process, but they also give us live feedback about the site. They help us not to become stale,  to keep our minds open, to never rest. Hopefully, working with us help our students... Read More...

Basically, it all started in 2001. Before then, Grinnell didn’t have a website. Well, it did have a web presence, but it was really a collection of unrelated web pages, maintained mostly in Dreamweaver. In 2001, we came up with a system to manage a more unified website, and give it some coherence. We didn’t know then that the type of system we have developed would be soon called “a content management system” (CMS), and that using various CMSs would soon become a de-facto standard in the web... by Sam Dunnington, '14 Anywhere I can eat mozzarella sticks until my head starts to hurt is a place I'm happy to be, but sometimes the Spencer Grille leaves me wanting for finer cuisine. I wasn't sure if there was ever a better alternative until I stumbled across the pictured menu, tucked away in the files regarding the Forum. The cover displays an eagle, printed in delicate copper, beckoning you towards the delicacies on offer at the Caffe del Foro. When the Forum opened in 1964, the goal was... Read More...

Did you know that Grinnell College used to have horse stables?  I didn't, either, until I found the Kelly Stables plaque (pictured right) in the Vault.  Sometimes, in the course of processing material for special collections or the archives, we come across items like this that capture our attention, but for which we have little information.  It is unclear whether this plaque ever hung in the stables, who made it, or the date it was made.  In fact, we do not have a whole lot... By Helen Lewandowski '12 My first three years at Grinnell, I worked with a very special, very small part of the Special Collections and Archives -- the postcards collection.  My task: scan, enter, and add metadata (cataloging information) for hundreds of the postcards from the Iowa Historic Postcard Collection.  Although now I digitize a greater diversity of things as a student archivist, I still look back on the postcard collection fondly.   Many of the postcards are from... Alas, the ranking season is upon us once again. Colleges and universities across the country are ranked on everything from food to politics, from sustainability to hipster-ness, from rigor to partying. Newspapers, magazines, online postings, and blogs follow each release noting which colleges rank where and which has gone up or down to the delight or horror or, rarely, the indifference of those of us with vested interests — administrators, board members, students, alumni — across the nation and...
