Title IX Information

About Title IX

Grinnell College does not discriminate on the basis of sex in its educational, extra- and co-curricular, athletic, or other programs, or in the context of employment. Sex discrimination is prohibited by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, a federal law that provides that:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

Grinnell College is committed to establishing and maintaining a safe and nondiscriminatory educational environment for all College community members. The College is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination in matters of admission, employment, and housing, and in access to and participation in its education programs, services, or activities. The College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, veteran status, pregnancy, childbirth, religion, disability, creed or any other protected class. Discrimination and sexual harassment on any of the bases covered by federal anti-discrimination statutes are unlawful and a violation of Grinnell College policy.

The College, as an educational community, will promptly and equitably respond to reports of sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual violence, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking in order to eliminate the harassment, prevent its recurrence, and address its effects on any individual or community. Title IX provides an educational process, supportive measures, and outcomes. Public law enforcement follows criminal processes, remedies, and outcomes. While the College will assess and act through the educational lens of Title IX, the parties have the option to avail themselves of and will be fully supported by the college to seek the services of law enforcement.

About Campus SaVe Act

The Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, or Campus SaVE Act, is an amendment to the Clery Act passed through President Obama’s Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013. The SaVe Act is a compliment to Title IX meant to help higher education institutions better respond to and prevent sexual misconduct. The SaVe Act updates the Clery Act by mandating higher education institutions participating in federal student aid programs to increase transparency and provide "primary prevention and awareness programs" regarding sexual misconduct. More information about Grinnell College’s prevention efforts can be found on the Prevention page.
