Purpose

Alumni offer a career exploration experience for current Grinnell students by allowing a student to shadow and observe them at work.

Process

Alumni contact the Career Development Office to express their interest in becoming an externship sponsor. Opportunities are advertised to students, who then apply to the CDO. The Externship Program takes place during Grinnell College's academic breaks and externship sponsors may specify when they will offer an externship site. During the externship, the selected student shadows the alum at work and, when possible, works on a small project to give the student further insight into the operation of the organization and career field. The student typically lives with the alum during the 3-7 day externship.

Cost

The cost to alumni sponsors is to provide lodging and meals to the student in their home and transportation to the worksite.
