Each class committee is responsible for maintaining peer connections to Grinnell College. Class committee members build and strengthen a network of philanthropic and engaged classmates serving the greater good of the College. Working together, members make peer-to-peer contacts and set an example for their classmates through their own participation in alumni activities and philanthropy.
Being part of a class committee means offering 5-10 hours per month for committee conference calls, contacting classmates, and asking for philanthropic support for the Pioneer Fund (link). Class committee members are also expected to attend the fall Volunteer Weekend in the two years preceding their reunion and the year after reunion, as the class committee will have specific work to complete for the class.
Class committee members have three primary responsibilities. First, in the months leading up to a class reunion, they work to generate excitement about attendance at reunion. Second, many committee members work with their class fund director to solicit their classmates, but some do not. Finally, committee members assist the class agent in outreach to strengthen class engagement through peer-to-peer connections.
- Reunion
Alumni attend reunion to see classmates. The quality of the Reunion will be determined by how many classmates attend. The best way to increase attendance and promote Reunion is to contact each classmate personally. Therefore, a goal of the committee is to contact each member of the class at least one time. This can be achieved by organizing a communication campaign using telephone, mail, e-mail, web, etc. During Volunteer Weekend, the committee can coordinate this process by assigning a list of classmates for each class committee member to contact. The Office of College and Alumni Relations will provide the committee with classmates' addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses, along with strategies for outreach.
- Solicitation
The committee can work with the class fund director and Pioneer Fund staff to determine how best to assist with the philanthropic efforts of the class. Committee members who prefer not to work with solicitation are not required to do so.
- Outreach
By reaching out to classmates and other alumni, the committee helps strengthen the network between classmates and connections to the College.
