2013 Selection & Training Dates

  • Student Affairs Leadership Fair:   January 28th (lunch time, JRC 1st floor)
  • APPLICATIONS & 2 REFERENCES DUE!   Wed, Feb 13, noon (at least one reference must come from a staff or faculty member at Grinnell College)
  • Individual Interviews by invitation  (if you are offered a position, you must accept or decline by Monday, March 18th)
  • IPOP Team Training / Planning:   Thursdays in April (4, 11, 18 & 25) 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Return to campus for IPOP '13:   Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Participate in planning ahead for the International Pre-Orientation Program (IPOP) during spring term; including four planning meetings
  • Establish a friendly, mentoring relationship with an assigned ‘small group’ of incoming international and global nomad students, starting in June through email correspondence, building up to the IPOP program, and continuing informally through the fall semester.
  • Return to campus before IPOP begins to help plan and coordinate IPOP , including days and evenings.*Members of the IPOP Leadership Team must be fully committed to IPOP during this time. While it is possible to apply for multiple leadership positions, it is not possible to accept and serve in positions that hold training, practice, or other time commitments that overlap with IPOP.
  • Greet new international students at Des Moines International Airport and help them get settled into the residence halls;
  • Help students get acquainted and feel comfortable with campus and with new cultural and academic expectations - through sessions and interpersonal interaction during and following IPOP;
  • Serve as a positive role model for new students;
  • Attend and/or assist with all IPOP sessions; and assist with select NSO sessions (to encourage international student engagement in that program);
  • Lead fall IPOP events, as determined by the Team;
  • Work with the OISA to identify & reach out to individuals who are struggling during the fall term.

 Ideal Applicant Qualities:

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5;
  • Exude leadership and can model balance for new students;
  • Mature, dependable, self-motivated, and able to work independently;
  • Sensitive to and able to communicate well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • Good listener. Someone others would feel comfortable sharing concerns with;
  • Organized, manages time well, and able to maintain confidentiality;
  • Aware of how his/her behavior affects and is perceived by others;
  • Involved with multicultural or international student groups on campus.
