The Grinnell experience creates a multi-generational community.

Neither of my parents attended college. They sacrificed to give us the opportunity they were denied. They emphasized college as a means to a good career and the gateway to high-paying, white collar jobs. I thought I was here to get educated just so I could get a good job.

Shortly after arriving at Grinnell College, my mindset changed significantly. Several months into my first year, I am awed that such a wonderful place exists, and that it is a place of open-mindedness, creativity, and love.

Grinnell is a place to learn, both inside and outside the classroom. Grinnell is a place where ideas can be expressed, no matter how unconventional, random, or silly. There is a club, sport, activity, or organization suitable for the interests of everyone. For goodness sake, we have a club and corresponding house of people who share a hobby of battling with foam replicas of Dark Ages weaponry!

I will learn much to directly aid me in whatever career I pursue, and I will learn more about people, the world, and myself – all infinitely valuable to me.

True, Grinnell is a foundation for a healthy career. Ultimately, Grinnell is giving me an education for a better life.

I’m still awed that I have the opportunity to spend four years of my life at such a place.

It is evident Alex values his Grinnell experience. His story reminds us Grinnell does more than educate students for future career. We prepare students to be well-rounded individuals intellectually equipped to make the world a better place. We can’t wait to see how Alex shapes his Grinnell experience and how that experience shapes the people he knows.
