The vegetable oil waste from the kitchen fryers is now collected and converted to biodiesel. Azure Biodiesel Company from Sully, Iowa, collects approximately 30 gallons of used vegetable oil from Grinnell College kitchens weekly.

According to Dick Williams, Director of Dining Services, "This is an environmental issue for us and there is no income or cost for the College. Dining felt that this was a great way to recycle the used vegetable oil and in a small way perhaps reduce our dependence on oil imports."
