Toyota Prius Electric vehicle on campus

Facilities Management recently purchased an electric vehicle for use in its fleet. While the truck is currently being charged by the conventional electricity grid, it may be possible to modify the vehicle by adding solar panels to charge the battery.

Hybrid Vehicle

In June of 2007, a Toyota Prius was added to the carpool fleet. The Prius should average over 50 mpg.

Biking

Bicycling is highly encouraged, as it is very easy to do both on campus. The town of Grinnell is a very "bike friendly" community and a number of bike lanes and trails exist. In the summer of 2004 the college also purchased twenty bright yellow Atlas Industrial bikes to re-implemented the campus public bicycle program. Students can check out one of five bikes at the JRC information desk for 48 hours, and the other 15 are spread around campus for student use. Also, the office of Human Resources issues "wellness challenges" that include bicycling to work. Participants can receive coupons to the local bicycle store.

Walking

The Grinnell College campus is extremely walkable. The office of Human Resources' "wellness challenges" include walking. In addition, the Security office has an escort service program to walk people home. This program is in effect 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; staff will safely accompany people anywhere on campus or within the city of Grinnell.
