Estonian Art since 1990 (2001) Inspired by the end of the Soviet occupation in 1994, Kay Wilson, Curator of the Print and Drawing Study Room, and John Mohan, Professor of Russian, traveled to Estonia to discover art that reflected major social and political change. Heavy Has Debt (2003) For Phoebe Washburn's Faulconer Gallery installation in the summer of 2003, she recycled pieces used from a previous installation. Washburn created a 14-foot tall and 95-foot long curved wall using only small cardboard pieces, drywall screws, and the help of volunteers. To Washburn, her art breaks down the elements of construction to the most basic form. Keith Achepohl: Gardens of Earth and Water (2004) Combining traditional printmaking techniques with unique paper shapes, stamping and collage, Achepohl creates layered images that have an even more powerful effect in their unique installation. Achepohl, professor of printmaking at the University of Iowa, sees himself not only as a printmaker, but also a gardener and beachcomber. Meighan Gale: Balancing Act (2003) In an effort to find balance between the many roles Gale plays in life - artist, wife, mother, individual - she illustrates them in photographs, using the expressive quality of physical movement of her own body. Patient Process (2001) As Donald Doe explains in the introduction to this catalogue, the idea of a Patient Process is not simply a method of art making but reflects a regional creative trend in the Midwest. Artists were chosen in part for their interest in printmaking, and all of the works in the exhibit were two-dimensional and highly detailed. Roots of Renewal (2003) In her essay for the catalog, curator Lesley Wright describes Roots of Renewal as …an exhibition which investigated new or renewed ways of seeing the contemporary Midwest, on beyond the stereotypes and clichés that have tended to delineate its visual culture. Guest Curator Elizabeth Perrill '99 organized an exhbition of contemporary Zulu Ceramics produced between 2004 and 2008. The exhbit provides a shapshot of South African contemporary ceramics that relates to the historical production of Zulu beer vessels and sculpture. Perrill's essay explores both the understated differences between works that might go unnoticed by an untrained eye and the newest divergences in Zulu ceramic aesthetics.

William Pergl: Sculpture (2001) In William Pergl's sculptures one sees the value of craft through skillful process. Although his favorite medium is wood, Pergl has also worked with metals, plastic and rubber. His sculptures are often large in scale and rest directly on the floor, existing in the viewer's space without mediation by a pedestal.
