In her essay for the catalog, curator Lesley Wright describes Roots of Renewal as ...an exhibition which investigated new or renewed ways of seeing the contemporary Midwest, on beyond the stereotypes and clichés that have tended to delineate its visual culture. The 18 artists in this exhibit all live in the Midwest, and their work was chosen because of this regionalism as well as their engagement in issues and subjects pertinent to a changing Midwest landscape and culture. The catalog also includes artist statements and many installation views of the exhibit. Essays by Lesley Wright, Jonathan G. Andelson, Donald Doe, and Lenore Metrick.
