Sandow Birk, American Qur'an, Sura 36 and 37, 2009
This suite of six drawings by Los Angeles artist Sandow Birk is drawn from a larger, years long project to hand-transcribe the 114 chapters, or suras, of the Qur'an, the religious text of Islam. Composed in the style of manuscript illuminations but contrasting the ancient text with contemporary American imagery, these drawings present sura 36 and 37.
