Yoga in the Gallery with Jennifer Mavin

Take a noon break in the Faulconer Gallery, practice yoga with Jennifer Mavin and enjoy our exhibitions. Jennifer Mavin engages participants in a warm and welcoming style of yoga accessible to all ages, abilities, and experience levels. She believes strongly in the power of yoga to transform individuals through breathing, strength, flexibility, mental focus, body awareness, and self acceptance. No experience necessary. Gallery Talk: Jin Lee, "Floating World"
July 7, noon

Faulconer Gallery
Photographer Jin Lee will discuss her photographs of Illinois prairies through the seasons from the exhibition Below the Surface: A 21st Century Look at the Prairie, as well as her recent series on Lake Michigan which explores ideas of transience and deep time. Lee is a Professor of Art at Illinois State University and her photographs have been shown widely, including the Queens Museum of Art, Sioux City Art Center, and Museum of Contemporary Photography. Her works are included in the permanent collections of Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Madison Art Center, and was awarded 2005 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.

Puppet Performance Workshop
Here's your opportunity to learn performance skills with internationally known Eulenspiegel Puppets! We'll need 7-24 people (students entering 4th grade- adults, 4 feet or taller) to be puppeteers for "The Flea." The Flea is a Spanish-American folk tale about a goat herder named Pedro who, with the help of an ant, a cockroach and a mouse wins an important contest and achieves his dream of joining a band, performed in both English and Spanish. It is enhanced with live music by Ron Hillis.
Rehearsals: July 29, 30, 31 9am - noon
Performance: July 31, 7pm


Sock Puppet Workshop
A sock is a wonderful thing! Transform your footwear into a puppet with personality! Monica Leo and Pam Corcoran will show you how. Open to children grades one and up, younger with caregiver.

The Old Lady and the Rice Balls (performance)
Eulenspiegel Puppets presents this wonderful Japanese folk tale on the steps of Stewart Library. An ingenious older heroine outsmarts two Oni (Japanese trolls) who imprison her in order to sample her delicious cooking. The show uses a clever stage that rises and folds out of a decorated box. It features several rod puppets and a combination rod puppet/rod marionette.

Finger Puppet Workshop
You can make one finger puppet or a whole cast of five. Complete your project with a mini-stage to perform on with the help of Eulenspiegel puppeteers Monica Leo and Pam Corcoran. Open to children grades one and up, younger with caregiver.

Needle Felting Workshop
Open to students entering 5th grade - adults. Take a little wool, a felting needle and watch a marvelous puppet take shape in your hands. Pam Corcoran is an expert needle felter and will help you learn the process.

This event is about looking at the prairie and developing our skills of observation and interpretation. . Participants will work with Larissa Mottl and Tilly Woodward to look at art, make a notebook, collect specimens, press plants and draw, using lenses and microscopes to take a closer look.

Young Artists Reception: Through Our Eyes

A reception to honor the creative achievements of area young artists, grades K-8. Works exhibited were made in Galaxy and Davis summer programs in partnership with the Faulconer Gallery outreach programs. Enjoy the art and refreshments, and tour the Faulconer Gallery's exhibits Below the Surface and Small Expressions.

A Prairie Reading

To enjoy the final week of Faulconer's Below the Surface and Small Expressions exhibits and in celebration of Grinnell's 150th year in the town of Grinnell, please join Faulconer Gallery, Grinnell College Libraries, and Prairie Studies for a Prairie Reading. Students, staff, and faculty will be joining together to read original works about the prairie and favorite excerpts featuring the prairie from poems, short stories, novels, essays, or other writings. Refreshments will be served.

Peggy MacNamara, Watercolor Workshop
Drawing/Painting in Watercolor
Sponsored by Faulconer Gallery, Prairie Studies and Iowa Prairie Network
September 5, 10 am - 3 pm
The workshop will review classical drawing techniques and the basics of layering watercolor, using the close observation of prairie specimens. Learn to use the transparency of watercolor to build with successive layers, resulting in strong color akin to oil painting. The technique also allows the artist to change areas and rebuild.
