Adelita functions as a figure for rethinking stereotypes of women in the Mexican past and in the Chicano community in the contemporary United States. Mexican-American artist Enrique Chagoya casts Adelita as a superhero in his comic book-inspired codex, Les aventures des cannibales modernistes (The Adventures of the Modernist Cannibals, 1999). The codex is one of many works by Bay-area based artist Enrique Chagoya in the Grinnell College Art Collection. Curated by Julia McHugh '07, this project was mentored by Associate Professor of Art Jenny Anger.
