Faulconer Gallery intern Nic Wilson '12 uses Jenny Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays as the starting point for an exploration of art, context and meaning. Part of Holzer’s multi-part piece will be presented in the Chrystal Center, and other parts will be presented around campus.
Nic writes: Jenny Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays draws its voice from the speeches of (in)famous political figures such as Trotsky, Mao and Lenin among others. Rearranging these texts, appropriating their style and power for her own ends, Holzer aims at provocation, at urgency. Wealth is condemned in one breath and lauded in the next; from the print calls the voice of both the executioner and the soul for whom the gallows await. Holzer is not interested in a particular didactic message but says rather, "I wanted the reader to jump, at least, and maybe consider doing something useful." Holzer is interested in action, in agency, on the part of the viewer.
