Music students to accompany silent film shorts

Film Reels Image Short films: Fri Nov 6, 7 p.m. Faulconer Gallery

This Friday evening, Grinnellians will have the opportunity to see a wide selection of avant-garde and surrealist short silent films accompanied by live music written and performed by Grinnell music students.

The event originated with the Cultural Films Committee, which then contacted music professors Eric McIntyre and Damani Phillips to see if there were any interested students. They also contacted Freesound, a collective of student musicians and bands. They ended up assembling over 20 student and community musicians to compose and perform original works to accompany the films.

The 14 films span the early days of the medium and were made between 1894 and 1972. Most of the films are experimental and innovative, and lend themselves to a diverse range of musical interpretation.

This event is sponsored by the Cultural Films Committee.
