Visiting Campus?
With the influx of new computers on campus, as well as communications with other external sources, we should be prepared to be able to open, view and edit documents from Microsoft Office 2007. Office 2007 brings with it a newly created document format, XML. Documents saved as 2007 will have extensions with a trailing x: .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, etc. These cannot be opened with Office 2003 unless a converter is installed. The Office 2007 File Format Converter from Microsoft allows previous versions of Office (including 2003, XP, and 2000) to work with the new formats of documents. We have placed the installer on the network at \\storage2\software\public\2007Converter. Once this has been installed, you can open and edit documents from Office 2007.

For help installing the converter, see Installing the Office 2003 Conversion Tool For Office 2007 Files

As mentioned in previous communications, there is currently no converter widely available for Mac users to read 2007 documents. We will continue to monitor this as it develops, and let you know when a suitable converter is available. For more information about how to save or convert 2007 documents to 2003, click here..
More information about the plan to upgrade to Office 2007/2008 will be announced soon.
