Preservation Policy

The Grinnell College Libraries pursue a policy that attempts to balance respect for and the broad accessibility of its collections in all formats. To promote the longevity of the collection we have an ongoing program of environmental monitoring; updated processing and repair procedures which follow the rule of reversibility; a brittle books evaluation system which includes the option of preservation photocopying and when appropriate, the designation of "last copy in Iowa" (a book so designated will not be withdrawn); aggressive housekeeping; a binding contract which reflects the principles set out in the 8th edition of the Library Binding Institute's Standard for Library Binding; and orientation in the proper handling of all collection material for library staff and special training through seminars and workshops for library staff whose positions include processing and binding.
