Haiti Awareness Week

Learn more about the history of Haiti and its key players, including Toussaint Louverture, at the exhibit in the southwest corner of the library between the Latino Collection and the jungle gym.   The exhibit also has books on Haitian literature and this small island country's role in Western politics and economies.

An exhibit showcasing the works of African American jazz poet, Yusef Komunyakaa.  Komunyakaa is best known for his poetry about his time in the Vietnam War as a correspondent and editor for the newspaper, The Southern Cross.  He has published 14 books of poetry including Dien Cai Dau, Magic City, and Neon Vernacular.

He will be reading at Grinnell College on April 28th.

This exhibit (located in the SW corner of the first floor of Burling Library near Jungle Gyms) focuses on the efforts of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo and the other effects of the "Dirty War" in Argentina. There is also information on Argentina's history and literature since 1976.

The activists from the Association of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo will be in Grinnell to discuss their efforts.  The events were held in JRC 101.

Wednesday, March 16th at 7:30 pm
Kris Thalhammer, Professor of Political Science at St. Olaf College, will discuss the background of the "Dirty War," and the human rights movement.

Thursday, March 17th at 11:00 am
The Madres will discuss "Thirty-Four Years in the Struggle for Truth, Justice and Memory in Argentina."

Thursday, March 17th at 4: 15 pm
Q&A with Madres Carmen Lapaco and Maria Adela Antokoletz.

This exhibit has a number of books on the recent political histories of some of the Middle Eastern and Northern African countries in the middle of protests and other forms of unrest.   There are books on Libya, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen, Oman, Jordan, Syria, Tunisia and Morocco.  Many of them focus on the political and economic changes that have occured in each country in the recent years.  There are also some comparative studies of two or more of these countries.

All materials can be browsed and checked out.

The Asian American mini-exhibits up on the 1st 2nd and 3rd floors have been replaced with new books.  This time we have exhibits for Asian American authors: Gish Jen, Ruthanne Lum McCunn, and David Mura.  There are also exhibits with Anthologies of writing by Asian Americans and one of collected oral histories of Asian Americans.

National Poetry Month April 2011

There are three exhibits on the first floor of Burling Library focused on celebrating poetry and poets for National Poetry Month in April.  On the wall by the Smith Memorial is a collection of poets writing in languages other than English originally. There is also a cart of both recent and classic English language poetry. Yusef Komunyakaa's exhibit is still up if you haven't gotten a chance to explore this great jazz poet who will be visiting the college on April 28th.

It has been 101 years since Mark Twain died, yet his writings continue to provoke interest and debate.  The University of California Press has begun publishing his unexpurgated autobiography and New South Books recently released a new edition of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn that substitutes racially-charged language with less inflammatory words.  Kathryn Vanney’s (’11) exhibition presents editions of Twain’s works from the libraries’ special collections and invites you to consider whether Twain’s work should be altered to encourage wider readership.
