My work has not been published yet. Would adding it to a repository hurt my chances of publishing in the future?
Different scholarly disciplines – and different journals and publishers within the same discipline – may have different rules for what constitutes “prior publication.” In some cases, posting on a Web site or in a repository counts as prior publication and disqualifies the article from subsequent publication in a journal. In other cases, Web sites and repositories are not defined as prior publication, though the journal may ask that a citation to the published version be added to the Web version if it is accepted. In case of doubt, check the Web site of the publisher or the journal, and if you are a student, check with your faculty mentor.
