This collection features current fiction and nonfiction primarily in English but by authors from around the world. It was begun as a rental library during the first half of this century when fees for library books went the way of many early Grinnell College traditions. Now Smith Memorial books can be borrowed for free to all who have a little free-time for recreational reading. The Smith Memorial Collection is located just to the west of the entrance door on the main floor of Burling Library. New titles are added to the collection on regular basis. About once a year, a portion of the collection retires and is shelved in the appropriate call number area of Burling stacks.
