Dear staff,

Applications are now being accepted for the 2014-15 Poweshiek Leadership Program (PLP). The goals of PLP are:

  • Unite emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Increase participants’ knowledge and understanding of county issues
  • Broaden a collective vision of a better county-wide community
  • Enhance each individual’s ability to lead

Interested individuals are encouraged to apply (click on the application link below). The applications will be vetted by the PLP advisory council to ensure that the PLP class “results in a group of dynamic individuals who represent a cross section of the community and bring diverse strengths to the program.” The last day to apply is Aug. 29, but Aug. 22 is preferred in order to meet the early bird registration fee. Notification of acceptance is Sept. 5. If there is a large group of applications from the college, it is likely that not all individuals will be selected. The Office of Human Resources will sponsor those admitted to the program, by paying the class fee and allowing release time from work to attend sessions. Interested individuals must commit to attending all nine sessions and have supervisory approval to participate prior to completing the application form. Please let HR know that you are interested, so we have a sense of how many people will be submitting applications.

Here’s what past Grinnell College participants say about the program:

Kelly Guilbeau, Career Counselor, Center for Careers, Life, and Service

PLP ’14

“The PLP offered me an opportunity to connect with, learn from, and contribute to my new home. We weren’t just glorified tourists, although we did take a lot of tours; we were able to ask important questions and have important conversations with people who can make a difference. What’s more, the program offered me the resources to see how I could be one of those people who makes a difference. I’m so glad I know more about the inner workings of Poweshiek County.”

Amy Brown, Library Assistant III, Access Services

PLP ’14

“The PLP was a wonderful experience for me. While politics is not one of my main interests, meeting the people who represent our county was a big eye opener. I now enjoy reading our paper even more as I’m familiar with the people and have a better understanding of our leaders in government and local businesses. An added benefit of the program was learning about the other towns in our county. I now shop and eat in other businesses in Brooklyn and Montezuma. My awareness of the businesses and opportunities that Grinnell offers has grown too. Overall, I recommend it highly.”
