A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Nick Hunter ’15 is used to the Iowa State Fair. Named the “world’s greatest state fair” by BuzzFeed, it’s internationally acclaimed and a regular entry on best state fair lists from The Travel Channel to Country Living. With more than a million attendees each year and 50+ foods on a stick, it’s also one of the biggest.

This summer, Hunter got to know the smaller side of Iowa’s fairs.

In Observations from a First Time County Fairgoer, Hunter talks about

  • his internship with conservation organizations Iowa Learning Farms and Water Rocks!,
  • teaching children and adults about water conservation,
  • the gripping poo toss game, and
  • his introduction to a new friend’s prize chicken.

If you want to play the poo toss activity yourself, Hunter says the Conservation Stations will be at the Iowa State Fair every day this summer, Aug. 7–17, 2014.
