As the American president stumbles from one scandal of incompetence to another, France may have just elected an "anti-Trump" in Emmanuel Macron. Yes, there was Macron's brave campaign-trail defense of the European Union and multilateralism in the face of Trump-esque nativism; but he will do something during his first week in office that strikes an even greater contrast with the U.S. commander in chief: He will visit French soldiers deployed in the Republic of Mali as part of an ongoing counter-terrorism operation that spans five countries in the West African Sahel.
