To be fair, we're dealing with educators here, not competing blue jean manufacturers, so the initial motivation is pure enough. Seth Allen, Grinnell College Dean of Admission and Financial Aid and a member of the Common Application's board, wants "authentic information, rather than more of what's already being produced at the request of colleges," and thinks it's time to overhaul a decades-old application process to take advantage of new-technology tools.
