She was born on March 9, 1932 in Columbus, Nebraska, the daughter of the late Oliver F. and Helene Wurdeman Smith. Mrs. Lesko graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Grinnell College in Iowa. She married James M. Lesko on April 22, 1956, and they lived in the Midwest and Europe, before relocating to the Asheville area in 1989.
