Class of 2014 Bowen Scholars announced

4 Iowa high school graduates receive $100,000 scholarships

GRINNELL, IA—Five Iowa high school students will soon benefit from the generous Howard R. Bowen Scholarship program at Grinnell College. Bowen Scholars are selected on the basis of a written scholarship examination and an on-campus interview and are awarded a $25,000 scholarship each year ($100,000 total during four years at Grinnell).

The Bowen Scholars entering Grinnell College this fall include:

  •  Tracey Cook, daughter of Edward and Jo Ann Cook of Cedar Rapids. While a student at George Washington High School, Cook participated in community service activities, policy debate, orchestra, and was an Iowa Makes Music peer leader.
  •  Chris Gallo, son of Tom and Susan Gallo of Grinnell. While a student at Grinnell Community Senior High School, Gallo participated in cross country, track, band, community service, student council, and National Honor Society.
  •  Max Herzberg, son of Myron and Kimberly Herzberg of Nevada. While a student at Nevada High School, Herzberg participated in varsity soccer, varsity basketball, choir, speech and drama club, and student council.
  •  Eric Mistry, son of Bomi and Louise Mistry of West Des Moines. While a student at Valley High School, Mistry participated in varsity swimming, student government, Principal’s Advisory Council, world cultures club, art club, and National Honor Society.
  •  Cassidy White, daughter of John and Susan White of West Branch. While a student at West Branch High School, White participated in varsity cross country, student council, choir, varsity track, and National Honor Society.

The Bowen recipients are among more than 75 Iowa students who competed for the scholarship, which was established in 1987 to honor Dr. Howard R. Bowen, former president of Grinnell College.
