GRINNELL, IA—Grinnell College President Russell K. Osgood announced today that Mickey Munley, a 1987 Grinnell graduate and vice president for college and alumni relations, will cap his 17 years of service to the college by vacating his current position and assuming a role as consultant to Grinnell for the next several months as he explores new challenges and considers broad professional opportunities.

“Serving on the administration at my alma mater has been tremendously rewarding and gratifying,” said Munley. “I’ve had a great experience and many accomplishments over the years, but now is a good time to seek out new challenges and enhanced opportunities in my career.”

“Mickey has been an effective and dedicated contributor to the projects, programs and accomplishments of Grinnell College during his tenure,” Osgood said. “He is a great strategic thinker; the best I have ever worked with in terms of demonstrating innovation and creative thinking. I am confident he will continue to identify, take on and achieve success with new opportunities in the years ahead.”

Munley has relinquished his responsibilities as vice president and will remain available as counsel to his former office and incoming President Raynard S. Kington, M.D., Ph.D., for the next several months.

“We all expect even greater things from Grinnell in the years ahead, so I am honored and eager to be helpful to President Kington as he transitions to lead our distinguished college,” continued Munley.

“Mickey has crafted major events, significant building development efforts, regular annual fund drives, huge college events, and significant national public relations efforts at a place that resists marketing and fundraising initiatives,” said Osgood. Other notable contributions include merging the once separate communications, alumni relations, and development operations into a single entity, revitalizing key publications, rebranding the college logo and campus signage, and numerous internal operation infrastructures.

“Grinnell has been a tremendous environment in which to work. The things I accomplished, established and learned put me in a unique position from which I can advise and assist other organizations with their own strategic aspirations, plans, implementations, and successes,” Munley said.

Grinnell Board of Trustees chair David White said, “Mickey did great work for the college. But more importantly, he brought passion and a deep commitment to Grinnell. The Board is grateful for his service and the major contributions he made improving the college’s development and public relations efforts.”

Munley has been vice president for college and alumni relations at Grinnell since June 2005. He first returned to the college in September 1993 to serve as director of annual giving; he became director of public relations in 1999 and vice president for communication in 2001.

Prior to working at Grinnell, Munley spent seven years working on federal political campaigns. Most notably, he co-directed Al Gore’s first primary win in the 1988 presidential campaign and was the political and finance director for former U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell’s 1992 campaign. He also worked in Colorado on the campaigns of former Congressman David Skaggs (1988), former U.S. Senator Tim Wirth (1991), and managed Dick Bond’s campaign for Congress (1990).

Munley is a political science graduate of Grinnell and holds an M.B.A. from the University of Iowa. He is married to Nancy Owens-Munley; they have five children and four grandchildren.
