On Wednesday, Oct. 17, David Beckmann, one of the world's leading advocates for the poor and hungry, will lecture in the Harris Center Cinema at 7:30 p.m. The lecture, titled "Exodus from Hunger: Changing the Politics of Hunger," is sponsored by the Rosenfield Program and is open to students, faculty, staff and the Grinnell community.
This lecture is part of an annual statewide dialogue, this year consisting of 14 World Food Prize Lectures at Iowa colleges, universities, and other venues on issues of great importance in providing a nutritious and sustainable food supply for the world's people. In 2010 David Beckmann became the co-recipient of the $250,000 World Food Prize for his landmark achievements in building and leading Bread for the World. Bread for the World is a non-governmental organization that has enlisted the efforts and commitment of everyday citizens throughout the world in the fight to end poverty and hunger in communities around the globe.
Bread for the World has an impressive record of achievement under Beckmann's leadership. Due in part to the persistent, bipartisan advocacy by Bread members, the U.S. government has tripled funding for effective programs to help developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Bread has also helped strengthen U.S. nutrition programs, assisting millions of families in the United States who struggle to feed their children. The innovative and impassioned strategies Beckmann has implemented to rally public support for bringing about policy changes have resulted in important legislation focused on long-term solutions, including increased resources for agricultural science and technology as well as support for development in poor countries.
