GRINNELL, IA—Grinnell College recognized the professional accomplishments and service contributions of nine alumni during Alumni Reunion Weekend, June 2-6 on the Grinnell campus. Alumni Award winners are members of reunion classes who have distinguished themselves in their careers and communities and embody Grinnell’s mission of life-long learning and service.
Margaret L. Hedstrom, a 1975 graduate of Grinnell College from Ann Arbor, Mich., received an Alumni Award. Following is the citation read about Hedstrom’s accomplishments: “Through her work to manage and preserve electronic records, Margaret L. Hedstrom helps ensure that today’s important data is still accessible for years—and centuries—to come.
After earning a degree in history from Grinnell, Hedstrom earned master’s degrees in library science and history and a doctorate in history from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She staked out her specialty in electronic records early, working on electronic record preservation at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin as early as 1979. In 1995, she began work for the University of Michigan’s School of Information as an associate professor, where she has maintained her reputation as a noted expert on digital archiving.
Hedstrom is the author of ‘It’s About Time: Research Challenges in Digital Archiving and Long-Term Preservation.’ She has served on numerous editorial boards and advisory committees, including the U.S. Department of State’s advisory committee on historical diplomatic documentation and the U.S. Library of Congress’s national digital strategy advisory board.
