Nora’s Journey

Hopes and Plans for the Future

My final semester courses are bucket-list classes. I’ve completed my major requirements, so I’m going to enjoy trying some new types of classes, such as Introduction to Sociology and a policy studies class.

Right now, I’m applying to master’s programs for urban planning. I either want to do that or get some professional experience related to food justice and/or sustainable development.

I’m open-minded about the location that will be next for me. My many mentors at Grinnell have all shared with me just how winding and non-linear their paths have been.

I am confident that the flexibility and adaptability I’ve learned at Grinnell will serve me well!

Hopes and Plans for the Future

I want to become a licensed social worker therapist/counselor. After moving back in with my parents in Chicago, I’ll get a full-time job in psychology or a human services-related field. Then I will save up enough money to move out and get a masters degree in social work.

Right now, I’m bothering our career center (Center for Careers, Life, and Service) pretty frequently; they’ve had some awesome info sessions about mental health professions where we can talk to alumni. That has given me some great insight about how I can fit into this world.

I started networking and reaching out to Grinnellians who are doing some hard work out there. Some day, I will be a very kind alumni who anyone can reach out to and host them, perhaps in an apartment with my two cats.

Most importantly, I know that the things I’ve learned at Grinnell will stay with me forever.

I am at that point in life where I see many different directions in front of me, and the path is not so clear cut for me. I think I want to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical neuropsychology, to eventually build a career in a clinical setting, helping diagnose and rehabilitate people having issues with cognition.

Before I dive into a PhD though, I hope to find a job in a lab working with a clinical population. I’m interested in working with patients with dementia and/or working with traumatic brain injuries or stroke survivors. Whatever I end up doing, I know I will make sure that I am happy doing it.

There are so many opportunities that would not have been open for me if I had not attended Grinnell. I will always cherish my time here.

Passions and Possible Paths

I’m interested in pursuing a career working to reduce racism in health care and obstetrics, but I wasn’t quite sure what to do with all that. My internship at the Redleaf Clinic showed me one possible path I could follow.

There’s also a public health program at the University of Minnesota that focuses on mothers and infants and maternal health care. I’m very passionate about that.

Making It Real

I have some appointments with CLS (Careers, Life, and Service) scheduled to help me sort it all out, and I’ve spoken to some of my professors about possible opportunities. Just taking that first step of making those appointments, I think, is going to be helpful going forward.

The professors truly care about my success, and the open curriculum allowed me to create my own path and discover what major was best for me. I know they’re going to be there for me this year, and I want to be able to continue that connection even after I graduate.

I am enjoying my senior year and just trying to live in the present moment. It goes by so fast! Although I want to plan for my future, I also I don’t want to get too bogged down looking for jobs.

Throughout my time at Grinnell, I’ve had a lot of great experiences with research and travel abroad. I've been able to engage in deep, rigorous studies. I know this will serve me well in my professional life, and I will definitely cherish the time I’ve had here at Grinnell.

I’m dipping my toes in a lot of new things. I’ve been picking up some new hobbies in fiber arts and music — I’ve really enjoyed my harp lessons this semester!

After graduating, I’m interested in pursuing a career in education, either in a formal classroom setting or an education administrative program. I just want to be a part of a community that helps students learn and grow.

I love to travel and expand my understanding of the world by engaging in different cultures. I am currently getting my Teaching English as a Foreign Language License 9 (TEFL), which was partially subsidized by our career advising office. I am open to going anyone, but being Peruvian-American, I was thinking about spending more time in Peru, or maybe returning to Korea, where I studied abroad.

I enjoyed my college experience quite a bit. I was worried that with Covid there would be a large absence of community, but Grinnellians surprised me with how much and how deeply they wanted to connect with me. My second year, I learned how to engage even more deeply with other students. My third year, I connected a lot more with professors, faculty, and staff. My senior year, I feel like I’m a true member of the College and town community, frequently visiting small businesses, including thrift stores and coffee shops, and being so involved in the local schools.

I plan to enjoy my last year at Grinnell and then pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry. I’m grateful for Grinnell and everything it has taught me, and I’m excited for what is next.

I want to study analytical chemistry. I really want to be a professor and mentor for students. My organic chemistry professor, Professor Mobley, approaches his teaching very collaboratively and is interactive with students. I’m inspired by his teaching and want to be that kind of teacher for others.

Other than that, I want to keep traveling!

Next year, I’m looking at a fellowship opportunity. I worked at a Spanish immersion camp for the last three summers. They have a fellowship there that’s essentially traveling around learning languages, exploring the world and culture. I’m in the process of applying, but I don’t know if I’m going to get that. So I’m also looking for a job, ideally a remote job.

My adviser and I had this phenomenal conversation that I think relieved a lot of the stress that I’ve been having. He was like, “You need to bounce around for a while. Don’t get weighed down and feel like the first job that you take is where you’re going to spend the rest of your life.”

It’s just nice to have people who actually know what they’re doing because I definitely don’t.

Whatever I do, I have a strong sense that whatever it is, it’ll work out!

Hopes and Plans for the Future

Grinnell has been helping me figure out what I’m capable of and giving me confidence in those capabilities since the day I arrived on campus. I have a meeting with CLS [Careers, Life, and Service] literally once a week because they’re really encouraging and they really help me turn my dreams into action steps, which is hard to do on your own.

I think every single one of my professors continues to be a great resource. I can pretty much ask them anything. That’s just the benefit of having a small, but also a very intentional school community that extends to professors, alumni, and fellow students, all trying to help each other succeed.

What’s my next step? I have a lot of dreams and a lot of things that I’m passionate about. I don’t know exactly how it’s going to shape up, but I could see myself being a therapist or a school counselor, or being a teacher or working in public service. I’m passionate about education and working with young people. I’m passionate about social justice and social justice issues.

I know whatever next step comes, it’s going to have some semblance of those things involved. And then we’ll just go from there.

And, I want to make the most of my moment now and just have a lot of fun.
