Resolution on the Response to Hate Crimes
Sponsor: Senator Hoye (CLGR)
April 16, 2008
WHEREAS the hate crimes on campus violated our community and were confusing, unsettling, destabilizing, and hurtful for LGBTQ individuals, allies, and the Grinnell College campus as a whole.
WHEREAS faculty and staff have attended student organized meetings and rallies, dedicated class time to discussing the implications of these events, actively listened to and asked about students' concerns and perspectives, and contributed meaningfully to campus dialogue through the statement by Executive Council and Professor Johanna Meehan's public comments.
WHEREAS we believe positive behavior should be recognized and appreciated so as to rebuild and reinforce the supportive community of Grinnell College.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by this assembled Joint Board, that the Student Government Association of Grinnell College commends the faculty, staff, and administration for their empathy and support in this important time. We urge the community as a whole to continue this caliber of support during Pride Week (April 18-26), not only in attending events, but also in continuing to question the ways bias motivates our own thoughts, words, and actions.
