This award, donated by a Grinnell alum to honor Ray Obermiller, is given to one, two, or three first-year students with financial need who, in the opinion of the selection committee, have demonstrated excellence and integrity in academic work and extra-curricular activities at Grinnell. The award, typically $1500 to $2000 per recipient, is to be used in the second year and is awarded for one year only. In 2009-10, there is $5,900 to be awarded to members of the class of 2013.
The committee bases its selection on the following criteria:
- Academic ability
- Financial need
- Promise of future contributions to campus community.
All other factors being equal, there is a slight advantage given to students who have participated in intercollegiate athletics.
In late January, a select group of first-year students will be invited to submit application forms. Students are invited to apply based on GPA and financial need. Applications will consist of the following elements:
- A completed Obermiller Scholarship information form. On this form, please be sure to note the amount of time (per week or per semester) that you spent on each activity. Please note that the committee does not expect any applicant to have an answer for all sections; all of these sections are listed so that the committee has the best sense as to how you have elected to spend your time at Grinnell so far.
- A unofficial copy of your transcript
- A completed scholarship application permission form and waiver
Please follow the Office of Social Commitments' scholarship application submission guidelines.
These materials will be due on Monday, March 15, 2010 by 5:00pm and should be returned to the Office of Social Commitment, 1233 Park St.
All applicants are expected to adhere to these ethical guidelines.
