One-Time Exemption of a Student's Summer Earnings Contribution for a Summer Educational Opportunity
Grinnell College seeks to encourage students' experiential and educational opportunities by exempting qualified students receiving need-based financial aid from one summer's earnings contribution for the following educational experiences that offer no or minimal remuneration:
* Grinnell College sponsored internships that are processed through the Career Development Office. Many internships receive Grinnell College funding through one of three distinct programs; the GRINNELLINK Summer Internships, Grant Program Internships (including Lilly Externships) or Special Endowed CDO Internships
* Summer courses, where at least (4) credits earned are accepted by the Registrar for transfer to Grinnell College.
* Summer research of at least (8) weeks at Grinnell College or at another research institution.
Students planning to request an exemption must file a Statement of Intent by the first Monday of June. Proof of successful completion of the educational experience must be filed with the Financial Aid Office by the third week in September. In some cases, proof of completion may take time to acquire, such as applying to the Registrar to accept summer school transfer credits; all of this must be complete at the time you submit proof of completion. More information and copies of the Statement of Intent and Proof of Successful Completion forms can be found on the Financial Aid Office website at http://www.grinnell.edu/offices/financialaid/
Students taking summer courses must produce a signed Transfer Course Approval Form and provide proof of course completion by way of an official transcript. Please note the Transfer Course Approval Form must reach the CDO no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008.
Students interested in a Grinnell College sponsored internship are required to complete the following forms by 4:00 p.m., Monday, May 5, 2008:
* Grinnell College Sponsored Internship Intent Form (form to request exemption)
* Universal Internship Information Form
* Internship Proposed Budget Form
* Student Intern Waiver, Release and Indemnification Agreement
* Confirmation of Acceptance from Internship Worksite
Please note that all stated forms for the internship are available online at http://www.grinnell.edu/offices/cdo/students/includes/Universal%20Internship%20Application%2007-08.pdf
All students requesting an exemption for completion of a Grinnell College sponsored internship will be required to complete a Final Learning Summary Report.
Exemption Schedule for a Summer's Earnings Contribution- For Summer Internships and Research
The level of exemption for students undertaking a summer internship and research is based on a sliding scale taking into account summer earnings and costs incurred in pursuing the internship (these last are determined in consultation with the CDO as part of their application). Grinnell summer research students (enrolled in a 199, 299, or 399) should note that they need not calculate net earnings, as the level of the stipend qualifies them for full exemption.
| Net earnings (earnings minus out-of-pocket expenses as determined by the CDO) | Amount of exemption* |
| $0-$3,400 | $2,000 (or 100% of the contribution that is part of your financial aid package) |
| $3,401-$4,000 | $1,500 (or 75% of the contribution that is part of your financial aid package) |
| $4,001-$4,598 | $1,000 (or 50% of the contribution that is part of your financial aid package) |
| $4,599-$5,000 | $500 (or 25% of the contribution that is part of your financial aid package) |
| $5,001 and above | $0 |
* The amount of exemption is based on the maximum level of summer's earnings contribution; the exact level of exemption will be based on net earnings and the amount of contribution established in your financial aid package.
* Your exemption cannot be higher than the amount of your expected contribution.
