The Grinnell Connection Externship Program

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Grinnell Connection Externship Program?
It's a program that allows Grinnell students to get a 1-2 week "real world" work experience as they observe an alumni sponsor in his or her workplace.

2) How do I apply?
Applications are available by clicking the following link: Externship Application

Send application to:
The Grinnell Connection Externship Program Coordinator
Grinnell College
1127 Park Street
Grinnell, IA 50112

Or fax application to:
The Grinnell Connection Externship Program Coordinator
641-269-4508

Deadline to Apply: Friday, December 15, 2006

3) When do I need to apply by?
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

4) What are some things I should consider when I'm creating my externship?
How long will your externship last (one or two weeks)?
What you want your extern to accomplish-what are your expectations?
How much time can you spend with your extern out of the office?
What skills do you want your extern to have?

5) When does my externship take place?
The Grinnell Connection Externship Program will take place between March 17-April 1, 2007 (spring break at Grinnell College). You can choose which dates you want your externship to cover.

6) After I send in my application, what happens next?
Students will apply for externships starting in January, 2007. Decisions for externship placements are announced on Friday, February 16, 2007. As an alumni sponsor, you can have as much or as little involvement in the selection process as you want. Contact the Grinnell Connection Externship Program coordinator for more information.

7) What are my obligations after the externship?
We ask that you complete an Alumni Sponsor Evaluation, which will include a reflection on your experience and the relationship you had with your extern. We would also appreciate feedback on ways to improve the Grinnell Connection Externship Program.

8) How much does all of this cost?
As an alumni sponsor, the cost to you is negligible. Students know they are responsible for travel costs and meals. You may incur out-of-pocket costs if you treat your extern out to a meal or things of that nature. That is not an expectation of The Grinnell Connection Externship Program.

9) What should I consider when thinking about the home stay?
You should consider your habits, lifestyle, the accommodations you can provide, as well as how having an extern will impact your daily schedule.

10) I have kids. Should I still do a home stay?
Yes! Most Grinnell students like young children and watching you balance your home and family life can be a valuable learning experience for your extern.
