Interviewing Opportunities

On Campus Recruiters

The On Campus Recruiting program offers straightforward opportunities to connect with employers who are interested in Grinnell College students. While employers have varying methods of reviewing resumes and potentially interviewing students, there are four basic categories for students to consider.

  • On Campus Interviews: Employers travel to campus to conduct interviews in one of our Career Development Offices. Students often apply ahead of time for these interviews through eRecruiting or with the CDO.
  • Resume Collections: Each year several employers indicate an interest in receiving resumes specifically from Grinnell College students. Often times this request will come from an alum who understands firsthand the quality of a Grinnell College education and experience. Employers usually contact students directly to make interview arrangements. Interviews may be over the phone, at the CDO, or at the office of the employer.
  • Job Postings: The Career Development Office lists online ALL summer jobs, local and on-campus jobs, internships, fellowships, and full time and part time jobs on eRecruiting making this a convenient job-search system for all students and not just seniors. Students may easily register personal and academic information with eRecruiting, upload resumes and cover letters, access employer profiles, search for jobs, and select interview times all from a single software application. To understand and use all aspects of the eRecruiting system, students are encouraged to attend an Online Employment Session. These sessions are advertised on our web page, the Campus Memo, and the College calendar.
  • Information Sessions: During the academic year, organizations visit campus to tell students about their opportunities. There are information sessions about full time jobs, internships, fellowships, and volunteer opportunities. A variety of graduate and professionals schools will do information tables in the Post Office area on campus, as will some summer camps and other jobs. Topics covered may include information about a specific career field, what opportunities that employer has available, what type of skills and abilities they are seeking, and/or what the graduate program has to offer.

Off Campus Interview Days

Senior Interview Days are our biggest recruiting program of the year. Senior Interview Days are organized through three separate consortia: the Selective Liberal Arts Consortium (SLAC), the Iowa Private College Career Consortium (IPCCC), and the All-Iowa Education Placement Consortium. Grinnell College is a member of each of these consortia. Many of the nation's top employers enjoy the convenience of recruiting through a consortium of colleges because they can connect with more students at a time, thus saving them time and money.

What is a Senior Interview Day?
A Senior Interview Day is a daylong event conducted in one location, usually a hotel. The consortia we are a member of hold Senior Interview Days in Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and five locations in Iowa (Grinnell, Newton, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Cedar Falls).

Why should I apply to jobs through a consortium?
Senior Interview Days are a time efficient way of gaining access to a large number of employers over the course of one day. These events are especially useful for exploring your options, interviewing, and potentially being hired by organizations that don’t recruit on campus. Opportunities represented include the Non-Profit, For Profit, and Public Service sectors. There may also be some year-long internships and other opportunities suitable for graduating seniors.

Selective Liberal Arts Consortium
Grinnell College is a member of this 12-college consortium which holds December and January interview days in Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. These Senior Interview Days cater specifically to small liberal arts college students looking for jobs with participating employers understanding the value of a liberal arts education. Seniors must attend an Interview Days Registration session to receive their username and password. Early planning is crucial to participate in these Senior Interview Days as the application deadline is late October. An overview of this program is available at the Selective Liberal Arts Consortium’s web site (http://www.slaconsortium.org/students.htm ).

Iowa Private College Career Consortium
The Iowa Private College Career Consortium (IPCCC) is a cooperative recruiting service sponsored by twenty-one independent colleges and universities in Iowa. Senior Interview Days and Career Fairs are offered in the fall and spring in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Newton, and Grinnell. Local, regional, and national employers offer students the opportunity to gain information about specific career fields, gain valuable interviewing experience, and potentially land a job. Students must attend an Interview Days Registration session to receive their username and password. Early planning is crucial to participate in these Senior Interview Days as the first application deadline is mid September. An overview of this program is available at the Iowa Private College Career Consortium’s web site (http://ipccc.gvc.edu/student_information.html).

All-Iowa Education Placement Consortium
The All-Iowa Education Placement Consortium is a partnership of Iowa college and university career services offices. The purpose of the All-Iowa Consortium is to provide expanded opportunities and resources for certified educators in the State of Iowa seeking employment in educational institutions. The Consortium sponsors The National Educator Expo, an annual fair hosted by the University of Northern Iowa which represents school districts from across the nation. Students wishing to be educators have an opportunity to meet one-on-one with school administrators (http://www.uni.edu/careercenter/consortium/).
