What will you get from this externship:. By spending time in an IAE program the student will observe the teaching techniques used in a short-term, intensive language program that includes all of the basic skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening). The classrooms we use vary from new rooms with advanced computer technology to older rooms with nothing more than basic white boards, so the teachers must adapt their teaching plans to the assigned room (we don't always have a choice, depending on the total enrollment numbers). I will make arrangements for the extern to work with various teachers in order to observe as many student skill levels and types of courses as possible.
Additional Information: I have Labrador retriever who sheds non-stop so anyone with allergies to dogs would have problems in my house. He's a certified therapy dog who adores everyone he's ever met, so there will be no issues with growling, biting, or snapping. No smoking - I'm a fanatic!

My work consists of a variety of public committee meetings, policy discussions, informational presentations related to state interests, budget analysis, legislative debate, and closed door discussions of politics. A day's work in the legislature is often unpredictable and can be very interesting as it coincides with what the average reader might find in the news.

What will you get from this externship: For any extern that is potentially interested in public policy (not necessarily politics), this might provide some insight into different ways to engage that interest professionally. Our staff at the Capitol include research and legal analysts, caucus staff that prepare legislative briefings, historical staff that preserve documents and artifacts on display, and state departmental staff that specialize in transportation, natural resources and conservation, and many other areas of public policy. Externs interested in a particular area of policy would likely have an opportunity to attend meetings related to that interest, even if I don't necessarily serve on those committees. Similarly, I would be glad to set up meetings for the extern if they have identified particular interests ahead of their visit. There are also many opportunities to engage a student who is interested in politics, or introductions I could facilitate if they're interested in Iowa politics specifically.

Position Title of Alumnus & Description: Mental Health Professional - At Rochester Center for Autism (RCA), we provide individual, one-on-one behavioral therapy and skills training for children who are on the Autism Spectrum. Our therapy is based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Ivar Lovaas' landmark 1987 study (and its replications), and BF Skinner's analysis of learning and verbal behavior. I provide individual therapy, and complete diagnostic assessments with children and families to assist in determination of clients' eligibility for our program. What will you get from this externship: While spending time at RCA, the extern will observe as therapists provide individual therapy to children with autism. The student will also spend time learning some of theoretical concepts that influence our therapy. This learning will occur when the student meets with various staff, watches training videos, completes some reading, and of course, observes therapy. The extern will attend a variety of meetings in which therapy is discussed, and planning for future therapy occurs. The extern may attend parent meetings, including a parent support group, and possibly a sibling support group. The Oologah Lake Leader is the state's most honored community newspaper, but we do investigative work that picks up on the national work as well. Wylie Communications Inc. is a crisis communications, public relations, political consulting and advertising firm with a national clientele. During the time in question, we will be working primarily on political and public issues for clients that include a high profile District Attorney and a committee working to extend a public infrastructure tax for one of the state's largest counties at a time when even tax extensions are faring very poorly with voters. I also am the public information officer for a regional, taxpayer subsidized ALS ambulance service. Most of what I handle involves public policy and medical financing issues rather than emergency calls. The problems we face at OTEMS provide a microcosm of the problems involved in health care reform and deficit/cost reduction vs. quality of patient care at the state and federal level.

OTEMS is dealing with financial issues, trying to deal with reduced income without harming patient care or response times, and also is developing its brand (the service is young by ambulance standards, less than a decade old) and working on patron membership programs to increase revenues.

What will you get from this externship: During the externship I will be bringing in subjects from all over North America (specifically people skilled at replicating early stone tools) to participate in these studies. The extern working with me will be able to initially observe the use of cutting edge motion capture technology (both digital and infrared systems which record at >200Hz) and then receive training to use the equipment him or herself. We may also use high speed pressure-sensing equipment to capture data on manual pressure distributions during a variety of activities, in which case the extern would also be trained on that equipment, as well. We will discuss how to conduct scientific investigations, starting with the formation of a question, on to project and protocol development, data collection, interpretation and publication.

This work is being done in various ways - partly with support from development programs which ACHR implements itself, and partly with support from the many partner organizations that are part of the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights - a big regional coalition working on issues of housing, poverty and access to land for the urban poor in Asia.
