Internships

Students at Grinnell College may participate in a range of internship opportunities both during the academic year and in the summer. Summer internships are available throughout the world with options for variable credit and funding. Contact the CDO for more information at x4940.

When turning in an application for a CDO sponsored internship or externship, please place the pieces of the application in the order indicated on the checklist. It is your responsibility to verify that all documents are turned in. The CDO will not consider incomplete applications.

The CDO is pleased to announce an open internship funding opportunity! Students must currently be a first-year, second-year or third-year student in good academic standing and currently enrolled. The monies are for unpaid internships and not academic or researched based experiences. Internships must be non-credit bearing. If you have been denied funding through the Grant Program, your worksite is ineligible. The confirmation from the worksite must be submitted at the time of application. NEW! Clarity in Numbers, LLC Internship
Deadline to Apply for Clarity Internship Opportunity: Monday, May 19, 2008 at 5:00 pm to the CDO

Clarity in Numbers, LLC is a newly formed actuarial national actuarial consulting practice that provides custom solutions to public and not-for-profit employers who offer retirement and health and welfare plans to employees.

Intern will receive same experience as a new actuarial analyst and perform similar tasks of a new hire. Tasks include learning actuarial valuations from start to finish (pension and retiree medical), benefit statements and benefit calculations, government form preparation. Intern will learn how consultants interact with the clients.

Strong emphasis in mathematics/statistics; actuarial focus preferred; actuarial exams attempted/passed preferred. Majors desired: Actuarial Science, Math, Statistics, or Business. GPA desired: 3.3 or higher.

Credit bearing internships are available during the fall semester in Grinnell and the surrounding area. Interns work two full days per week at the internship worksite and take two or three other classes. Interns work with a faculty sponsor, maintain a daily journal, and complete a final scholarly paper or project during the internship. Interns receive four 300 level divisional credits. Applications are due the spring semester prior to the internship.

GRINNELLINK Summer Internships


Several opportunities, typically with Grinnell College alumni, are open exclusively to students at Grinnell. The positions are competitive and provide a stipend to the selected student. Positions change from year to year and may include internships in museum studies, forensic social work, film, art, political action, environmental education, community supported agriculture, biotechnology, sports management, journalism, financial equity analysis research, environmental and social performance in developing countries, and legal services on constitutional issues.

Current 2nd and 3rd year students are eligible to apply for grants to support unpaid summer internships typically not available during the academic year or accessible without the funding. Funding is available through topical programs in prairie studies, global development, business, gender and women's studies, international relations, applied technology, world population control, writing, religious leadership, environmental studies, arts & museum administration, Chinese studies and conflict resolution.

These programs are very competitive and look for clarity in presentation, support from sponsoring agencies, well-defined responsibilities, originality, and uniqueness of opportunity.

Summer Internship Grant Programs

Arts & Museum Administration -- Supports internships in curating exhibitions, researching and cataloguing objects, exhibition design, museum education, arts publicity, and/or event planning within an arts/museum organization.

Center for Prairie Studies -- Supports internships that promote an awareness, appreciation, and understanding of our region involving scientific research, fine arts & humanities, historical study, social sciences or education in any of these areas.

Environmental Studies -- Supports internships that offer students a first-hand educational experience in environmental studies and conservation.

Lilly -- Supports internships focusing on religious leadership.

Noun (Gender and Women's Studies) -- internships that focus on a greater understanding of women and their relationships to the society around them.

Noyce/Intel (Applied Technology) -- Supports Internships in applied technology within a non-profit or governmental agency in the United States.

Peace Studies -- Supports internships that deepen the student's understanding of the causes of violence and violations of human dignity and gives them direct experiences by applying creative strategies for conflict prevention, resolution, or reconciliation in international or interpersonal disputes.

Rosenfield -- Supports internships in related fields of public affairs, international relations and/or human rights.

Sunnen Foundation -- Supports internships in social services, particularly in worldwide population control.

Wilson -- Supports internships in for-profit, non-profit, and government sectors.

Writing -- Supports internships in organizations focusing on writing as a profession. Applicants should describe one or more specific pieces of writing they will produce during their proposed internship.

Grinnell-in-London (Fall Semester)

As part of the fall Grinnell-in-London program, up to three students will be eligible to participate in internships with a Member of Parliament.

The fall Grinnell-in-London program is a dedicated internship program supervised by an on-site member of the Grinnell College faculty. Students participate in a range of internships based upon their individual career interests.

The fall Grinnell-in-Washington program is a dedicated internship program supervised by an on-site member of the Grinnell College faculty. Students participate in a range of internships based upon their individual career interests.
