Judith Butler to speak at 2008 Commencement

Judith Butler Philosopher and gender politics expert Judith Butler will address the Class of 2008 at Grinnell College's 162nd Exercises of Commencement, on Mon., May 19, at 10 a.m. on Central Campus.

Butler, who is Maxine Elliott Professor of Rhetoric and Comparative Literature at University of California, Berkeley, is a prolific writer and author of 10 books and essay collections, including "Undoing Gender" and "Giving an Account of Oneself."

Currently at work on essays pertaining to Jewish philosophy, Butler continues to write on feminism, gender and sexual politics, and cultural and literary theory. In 2004, she published a collection of writings on war's impact on language and thought titled "Precarious Life: Powers of Violence and Mourning." She was recently selected to membership in the prestigious American Philosophical Society.

Commencement Tickets

It is important to remember that we will try to have Commencement outside at all costs (even if light rain--bring rain gear) and no tickets are needed for an outdoor ceremony. If we are forced to go inside due to intolerable weather, each senior will receive a specified number of guest tickets for indoor Commencement (seniors do not need tickets). Because of the limited seating capacity of Darby Gym (our indoor location) and the need to adhere to safety regulations for indoor assemblies, a limit of five tickets per senior for indoor Commencement will be strictly enforced. We do provide a live, closed-circuit viewing at the Harris Center Cinema for those without tickets. Arriving early for an indoor Commencement is advised; for outdoor Commencement this is not necessary. Seniors may pick up their tickets at the Rosenfield Center Information Desk with their senior packets. Distribution of senior packets will occur the week preceding Commencement.

All Campus Picnic

There is an all-campus picnic following Commencement. Each senior is asked to check with his or her family and indicate the number of people, including themselves, who will be attending.

Caps and Gowns

The Grinnell College BookStore will sell cap and gown, check with the BookStore for a date. A cap and gown comes as a set for $25, a variety of sizes are available based upon height, no pre-orders are necessary.

Grinnell College does not require students to purchase Caps and Gowns from the College Book Store, though it is reccomended. Grinnell College follows the standards accepted by the American Council on Education. The standards are available in a FAQ document from the American Council on Education here.

Recycled Commencement Gowns

Grinnellians for Economic and Social Diversity (GESD) collects gently used gowns after commencement for future graduates to use at no cost. Students may be able to reserve a "recycled" gown by e-mailing [gesd].

Reserved gowns may be picked up from the GESD library in Loose Pit at time to be determined. The earlier in the week they drop by, the better their chances of getting a gown in the right size. Several mortarboards are also available, but students will need to purchase tassels from the bookstore. Any further questions or requests for additional check out times can be directed to GESD's email account.

Borrowed gowns and new donations should be returned following the commencement ceremony.

Area Dining and Housing

Graduating seniors will be allowed to stay in their dormitory rooms until 12 p.m. the Tuesday following Commencement. Siblings attending Grinnell College may submit a written request to stay in the dorms through Commencement, requests must be made to Conference Operations and Events.

Other family members may find housing at one of the many hotels, motels, and other local accommodations.

Parking

Parking is available on sidestreets and lots located around the perimeter of campus. Anyone having trouble walking should be dropped off at Herrick Chapel on Park St. for both Commencement and Baccalaureate.
