GRINNELL COLLEGE APPOINTS NEW VICE-PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

GRINNELL, IA--Grinnell College President Russell K. Osgood has appointed W. Houston Dougharty of Lewis & Clark College as Grinnell’s new vice-president for student affairs.

Dougharty will join the college administration this spring, replacing Tom Crady who recently became dean at Dartmouth College after more than 25 years at Grinnell. In the interim, Elena Bernal, a 1994 Grinnell graduate and special assistant to the president for diversity and achievement, will lead the student affairs office.

Dougharty will oversee Grinnell’s student and professional staff in residence life and housing, student activities, international and multicultural student services, academic support, career development, health and counseling services, campus security, the chaplain's office, the campus center, and community service and social commitment.

"Houston’s experience and wisdom in student affairs proved to be the determining factor in this search," Osgood said. "We are lucky to get someone with his background."

Dougharty is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound, Western Washington University, and the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also held student affairs positions in counseling, peer advising, residence life, and student governance. A member of the American College Personnel Association and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, he served as associate dean of students at Iowa State University from 1997 to 1999. At Lewis & Clark College, Dougharty is the senior student affairs officer for 1,900 undergraduates and approximately 1,200 graduate students.

“I have known and respected Grinnell College and its programs for many years and am honored to begin work with an outstanding staff," Dougharty said. "I am so impressed with the Grinnell students and their student leaders and am eager to be their advocate as vice-president."

Grinnell College is a nationally recognized, private, four year, liberal arts college located in Grinnell, Iowa. Founded in 1846, Grinnell enrolls 1,600 students from all 50 states and from as many international countries in more than 25 major fields, interdisciplinary concentrations, and pre-professional programs.
