Local therapist Michele Weiner-Davis, founder of the Divorce Busting Center, was presented with an Alumni Award by Grinnell College on June 2 at the Alumni Assembly held on the College's campus during her 34th reunion. The College's Alumni Council presents these awards annually to graduates who have distinguished themselves by their extraordinary contributions of service to the College, their communities, or their professions.

In making the award, the College commended Weiner-Davis for her work to "strengthen marriages through her innovative and inspiring work as a psychotherapist and author." The citation went on to note that the Center "has been able to help thousands of married men and women reconnect with one another to create successful, intimate relationships with one another."

After graduating from Grinnell in 1973, Weiner-Davis earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Kansas. She opened the Divorce Busting Center in 1992 to help couples rebuild their relationships. In addition to offices in Woodstock, Illinois, and Boulder, Colorado, the Center includes a Web-based community and telephone counseling. Shortly after founding the center, she published Divorce Busting, which became a bestseller. She has authored six other books, including Fire Your Shrink!, The Divorce Remedy, and In Search of Solutions.

Her work has garnered praise from within her field: in 2001, she received the American Association of Marriage and Family's Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Marriage and Therapy award. She has also earned the Impact Award from the Coalition for Marriage, Family, and Couples Education. Her approach to enhancing couples' relationships has been featured widely in national newspapers and on television.
