DEFENSE, INTELLIGENCE, AND TERRORISM" TOPICS OF GRINNELL COLLEGE EVENT
Grinnell College alumnus Greg Thielmann, a staff member of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, and Lawrence Korb, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, will discuss "Defense, Intelligence, and Terrorism" at Grinnell College on Oct. 1 at 8:00 p.m. in the Joe Rosenfield '25 Center, Room 101.
A 1972 graduate of Grinnell, Thielmann has spent his entire career implementing foreign policy and researching national security and intelligence issues, most recently as director of the U.S. State Department's Office of Analysis for Strategic, Proliferation, and Military Issues. Thielmann has served in U.S. embassies in Brasilia, Bonn, and Moscow, and in several leadership capacities in the State Dept. related to arms control. His State Dept. work has been recognized with numerous awards for capable leadership, outstanding performance, and dedication to duty.
Korb, in addition to responsibilities for American Progress, is also senior advisor to the Center for Defense Information. During the early '80s, Korb administered about 70 percent of the U.S. Defense budget as assistant secretary. The Center for American Progress is a progressive think tank dedicated to "improving the lives of Americans through ideas and action, in the belief that a progressive is someone who is idealistic enough to believe that things can be better and pragmatic enough to get it done."
The foreign policy lecture is part of a "U.S. in the World" speaker series sponsored by Grinnell
College's Rosenfield Program in Public Affairs, the University of Iowa, and Drake University. The Joe
Rosenfield '25 Center is located at 1115 8th Ave. on the Grinnell College campus.
