FOREIGN POLICY SPEAKER SERIES CONTINUES IN OCT. AT GRINNELL COLLEGE

Grinnell College's Rosenfield Program in Public Affairs will continue its series of foreign policy lectures during October, in preparation for the Iowa caucuses and voter decision-making. The foreign policy talks are part of a "U.S. in the World" speaker series sponsored by Grinnell College, the University of Iowa, Drake University, and the National Security Network.

Foreign policy experts who will visit Grinnell in October include:

" Oct. 8, 8 p.m.: Janne Nolan, professor of international affairs at the University of Pittsburgh, will present "Providing for the Common Defense." Nolan has been an advisor to the U.S. State Dept., the Senate Armed Services Committee, the U.S. Institute for Peace, and the Ford Foundation.

" Oct. 15, 8 p.m.: Former Iowa Congressman James Leach will discuss "The U.S. and China." Leach, who represented Iowans in Congress for more than 30 years, was recently appointed director of Harvard University's Institute of Politics.

" Oct. 22, 8 p.m.: Former president of the U.S. Institute for Peace Samuel Lewis will offer perspectives on the Middle East, based on his experiences as former U.S. Ambassador to Israel and Afghanistan and more than 30 years as a career diplomat. Since retiring from the Foreign Service, Lewis has been affiliated with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the Brookings Institution, and research centers at Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

" Oct. 29, 4:15 p.m.: Dan Restrepo, director of the Americas Project at the Center for American Progress, will discuss "U.S. Policy Toward Latin America." A first generation American of Colombian and Spanish parents, Restrepo also served on the staff of the U.S. House international relations committee where he focused on U.S. policy toward Haiti, counter-narcotics programs, the consolidation of Central American peace process, and U.S.-Cuba policy.

The foreign policy series will continue in November with presentations on "Energy and Climate" (Nov. 12) and "Global Public Health" (Nov. 26). All events are held in the Joe Rosenfield '25 Center, Room 101. The Rosenfield Center is located at 1115 8th Ave. on the Grinnell College campus. -30-
