WORLD FOOD PRIZE LECTURER AT GRINNELL COLLEGE TO DISCUSS FOOD SECURITY
Dr. Vishweshwaraiah Prakash, director-general of the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysore, India, will discuss "Sustainable Food and Nutritional Security" at Grinnell College on Oct. 15 at 4:15 p.m. in the Joe Rosenfield '25 Center, Room 101.
An international leader in food technology, Prakash has helped India maintain and improve its food security and local villagers to improve and increase their yields in traditional foods and practices. Among Prakash's initiatives are food packets with a three month shelf life that have been distributed to earthquake and tsunami victims.
The Grinnell lecture is part of a World Food Prize outreach program of distinguished international experts who present at educational institutions in Iowa during the week that the World Food Prize is awarded. The 2007 World Food Prize will be presented to Dr. Philip E. Nelson of Purdue University at a ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol on October 18. Nelson was named the World Food Prize winner for his innovative breakthrough technologies in the area of large-scale storage and transportation of fresh fruit and vegetables using bulk aseptic food processing.
Prakash's visit to Grinnell is sponsored by the Rosenfield Program in Public Affairs, International Relations and Human Rights. The Rosenfield Center is located at 1115 8th Ave. on the Grinnell College campus.
