Current Position
"I am the English pastor of a predominantly Chinese church in a suburb of Los Angeles.
Our church numbers about 500 people in total, and the English congregation comprises
about half that number. As a pastor I preach weekly, conduct weddings and funerals,
visit church members in their homes and in the hospital, lead a variety of meetings, and
provide various kinds of personal counseling. " David has served the Chinese Christian
Alliance Church in Northridge for seven years.
Career Path
David holds an M.A. in East Asian Studies (Yale University, 1980), an M.Div. (Fuller
Theological Seminary, 1987) and a Ph.D. in religion (Claremont Graduate University,
1999).
"After completing my M.A. in East Asian Studies, I taught English in Taiwan for 3 years
while continuing to study Chinese. I then returned to the United States for seminary
training.
"When I finished my Master of Divinity, I took a job at a Chinese church in Glendale,
California, as English pastor. The job was very similar to the one I hold now. I remained
in that position for 6.5 years, then left to pursue my Ph.D. It was while I was in my
doctoral program that I became familiar with my present church. I joined the staff of the
church in 1996."
Grinnell Experience
At Grinnell David majored in history and notes his "academic work at Grinnell has
contributed to everything I have done since I left Grinnell. But I am not sure my
extracurricular activities in college have had much effect on my ministerial work."
How He Can Help
"I would be happy to provide what assistance I could to any student interested in ministry in an evangelical Christian church, whether through an internship or in some other way."
