Pastor, First Church of Christ Congregational in Clinton, CT
Career Path
After majoring in sociology-anthropology at Grinnell and graduating in 1962, Martin
Gibbs attended Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Massachusetts,
where he earned a BD (now called an MDiv) in four years of study.
Rev. Gibbs served thirty-six years of local parish ministry in the United Church of Christ.
His first churches included the North Windham Union Church in Maine, the Asylum
Congregational Church in Connecticut, the North Madison Congregational Church in
Connecticut. In 1981 he became pastor of the First Congregational Church of Ansonia,
Connecticut. By 1990, Rev. Gibbs says that "it was time to make a final move or stay at
this church until retirement." He spent the last twelve years of his career as the pastor of
the First Church of Christ Congregational in Clinton, Connecticut. He left this position
because of "clergy burn-out -- I was the sole pastor of a 550+ member church that had
previously been served by two full-time pastors for 13 years prior to my pastorate."
How He Can Help
"I am willing to discuss the 'cost and joy of discipleship' within a
local parish setting."
